In August 1962 a strong earthquake measuring 6.1 in magnitude hit the Campanian Appennine. 68 towns were seriously damaged. Apice was evacuated and the population settled in a new town. However, few inhabitans continued to live in Apice until November 1980 when a catastrophic magnitude 6.9 earthquake determined its abandonment.
