FUTURE LIBRARY
2014 - 2114
Imagine a library filled with unread books—each one sealed until 2114. This is the visionary heart of the Future Library, a project conceived by Scottish artist Katie Paterson in 2014. Every year, a renowned author is invited to write a manuscript that will remain unpublished and unread for a century.
Meanwhile, in a forest just outside Oslo, Norway, 1,000 trees have been planted to provide the paper on which these texts will one day be printed. Authors like Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell, and Elif Shafak have already contributed to the collection.
Now, in 2025, the first manuscripts are nearly a decade old—but none will be read until 2114, 89 years from now. The Future Library is more than an artwork: it is a silent act of hope. A quiet message planted in time, waiting to be discovered by future generations. A testament to trust in literature, in the future, and in humanity itself.
